Minneapolis Shoal Light Station, Navigational lighthouse in Delta County, United States.
The Minneapolis Shoal Light Station is a navigational lighthouse standing 21 meters tall on an offshore location in Lake Michigan. Its concrete tower features a two-story base that once held equipment and living space for the lighthouse keeper.
Construction of this light station began in 1935 to guide ships through the northern waters of Green Bay. It replaced an earlier lighthouse at Peninsula Point that had served mariners since 1856.
The National Register of Historic Places recognized this offshore lighthouse in 2006 for its role in Great Lakes maritime navigation and architectural significance.
The lighthouse sits roughly 10 miles south of Peninsula Point near Escanaba, Michigan, in the waters of Lake Michigan. Today it operates automatically as an active aid to ship navigation without the need for on-site lighthouse keepers.
The light flashes in a five-second cycle, shining for less than 2.5 seconds followed by darkness. This distinctive signal pattern allows ship captains to identify it among other lights along the lake.
