Lake Wylie, Recreational lake and residential area in York County, South Carolina
Lake Wylie is a reservoir covering about 12,000 acres between South Carolina and North Carolina with roughly 325 miles of shoreline. The body of water supports boating, fishing, and water sports, while residential neighborhoods and recreation areas line the banks.
The lake was created in 1904 when a dam was built near Fort Mill to generate hydroelectric power. It received its official name in 1960 in honor of Dr. W. Gil Wylie and became central to the region's recreation and residential growth.
The community is named after Dr. W. Gil Wylie and reflects how residents connect with the water as a gathering place. People use the shoreline for recreation and social activities that shape the rhythm of daily life here.
Five public boat launch areas managed by Duke Energy and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources provide access to the water throughout the year. These access points are spread around the lake to serve different areas and visitors.
The water serves three purposes at once: it powers a hydroelectric station, cools two power plants, and supplies drinking water to nearby Rock Hill and Belmont. This dual use of infrastructure makes it central to the region's energy and water needs beyond just recreation.
