Augustinian Academy, Catholic educational institution in Grymes Hill, Staten Island, United States
Augustinian Academy is a school building from the 1920s situated on a large property in Grymes Hill. The structure displays classical architectural features of that era and served as an educational facility from 1926 until 1969.
The facility started in 1899 as the Catholic High School of Richmond Borough and relocated to the hilltop in 1926. It closed its doors in 1969 after operating there for several decades.
The building served as a major center for Catholic education on Staten Island and shaped generations of students. Its classical architecture still conveys the serious academic mission that defined the institution.
The property sits on Howard Avenue and remains visible and accessible to visitors today. The location is straightforward to reach, and visitors can study the exterior architecture from the street.
In 1909 the Academy received an American flag and a 100-foot flagpole from the Ancient Order of Hibernians for its tenth anniversary. This gift marked recognition of the place within the Irish-American community of the island.
