Grymes Hill, Staten Island, Residential neighborhood and hill in Staten Island, United States
Grymes Hill is a residential neighborhood on Staten Island that rises on a hill featuring serpentine rock formations and thick tree cover throughout. The area spreads across several city blocks and blends residential streets with institutional grounds.
The neighborhood took its name from Suzette Bosque Grymes, who settled there in 1836 after marrying John R. Grymes. Over time, the hill developed into an established residential area with college facilities added later.
Wagner College and the St. John's University campus sit prominently on the hill, drawing students and visitors who shape daily life here. These institutions influence the neighborhood's character and create gathering places for the community.
The neighborhood connects to Manhattan through express bus services and is defined by streets like Victory Boulevard and Richmond Road. Many visitors explore on foot, so comfortable shoes are helpful given the hilly terrain.
From the higher areas of the hill, visitors can enjoy clear views of Lower New York Bay and the Manhattan skyline. These views make the location a surprising vantage point on the broader metropolis from within Staten Island.
