Our Lady of Mount Carmel Grotto, Concrete and stone grotto in Rosebank, Staten Island, United States
The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Grotto features intricate designs made from fieldstones, glass marbles, and seashells, forming religious structures and shrines across the property.
Construction of the grotto began in 1937 by Italian American members of the Society of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, following the vision of immigrant Vito Russo.
The site represents Italian American heritage through its architecture and annual celebrations, including processions through neighborhood streets on July 16.
Located at 36 Amity Street, the grotto can be reached by taking the S78 Bricktown Mall bus from St. George Ferry to Tompkins Avenue.
Members collected stones during their WPA work jobs to create the structure, using wooden molds and cement to form detailed religious scenes and decorative elements.
