Our Lady of Mount Carmel Grotto, Concrete and stone grotto in Rosebank, Staten Island, United States

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Grotto in Rosebank is a religious shrine built from fieldstones, colored glass, and seashells assembled through careful handwork. The collection of stones, mosaics, and small shrines spreads across the grounds and displays various religious scenes throughout the property.

Construction began in 1937 when Italian American community members started building under the vision of Vito Russo. The shrine emerged during a period when Italian Americans were establishing deep roots and religious foundations in Staten Island.

The grotto reflects the identity of the Italian American community who built and cared for it with deep personal commitment. Visitors can see how this place remains a gathering point for shared celebrations and religious observance today.

The grounds are easy to walk through at your own pace, allowing time to study the small details throughout. The best time to visit is during daylight when the glass and mosaic work shines most vividly.

Builders collected stones during their WPA work programs and used wooden molds and cement to craft individual scenes and decorative elements. This hands-on approach made each component a personal contribution from the community.
