Eitel Hospital, former hospital
Eitel Hospital is a large brick building in Minneapolis built over a hundred years ago in the Classical Revival style. This five-story structure with a basement sits across from Loring Park and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its historical importance.
George G. Eitel founded the hospital in 1912 to serve wealthy patients in Minneapolis. After his death, his nephew George D. Eitel took over operations until the facility closed in 1985 and was later used as the Willow Street Center for Youth and Families.
The hospital is named after its founder George G. Eitel and once served as a medical center for wealthy Minneapolis residents. Original touches like Navajo rugs on sun porches and brass beds reflected the upscale care that made it known in the community.
The building is located on Willow Street across from Loring Park and is easily accessible by foot from the surrounding neighborhood. Visitors can view the exterior and architecture from the sidewalk, as the structure retains its classical appearance and is listed on the National Register.
Jeannette Eitel, the wife of the founder, was herself a nurse who directed the hospital's nursing training program. This uncommon combination of ownership and hands-on medical experience shaped the institution's character from the start.
