Federal Dam, Federal lock and dam in Rensselaer County, United States.
The Federal Dam is a lock and dam system spanning the Hudson River that lifts boats between different water levels. The lock chamber extends approximately 520 feet (158 meters) in length and adjusts for water level differences of about 14 feet (4.3 meters).
Construction began in 1916 to improve navigation along the Hudson River and allow eastern ships passage toward the Great Lakes. This project was part of a larger effort to modernize the region's waterways for increased river commerce.
The structure marks a transition point where the river's character changes from tidal waters to freshwater zones. Vessels passing through experience this shift as they move between different sections of the waterway.
The site is best viewed from public observation areas nearby, which are maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Water flow varies with the season, and you will see more boat traffic during periods of higher water.
It is the first lock complex boats encounter when leaving the Hudson River to enter the New York State Canal System heading toward the Great Lakes. This makes it a natural starting point for boaters planning trips to the region's larger lakes.
