Fisher Studio Houses, Art Moderne residential complex in Gold Coast, Chicago, US.
Fisher Studio Houses is a residential complex with twelve duplex units arranged around a central courtyard, defined by curved lines and geometric shapes throughout. Each unit features handmade stairs, herringbone wood floors, fireplaces, and glass block windows.
Architects Andrew Rebori and Edgar Miller designed this residential complex in 1936 for Frank Fisher Jr., an executive at Marshall Field & Company. It received Chicago Landmark status in 1996 for its architectural merit and handcrafted elements.
The complex reflects the shift from traditional housing to modernist design as European architectural ideas spread through America in the 1930s. Visitors can see how this approach changed what residential buildings looked like and how people expected to live in them.
The complex is located in the Gold Coast neighborhood and can be viewed from the street, where its curved forms are immediately visible. It is best explored from the exterior since the residential units are private.
Architect Edgar Miller personally created most of the handcrafted decorative elements throughout the complex, turning each unit into an artwork. These artistic details were a key reason the building earned landmark protection decades later.
