Fort Greene, Historic neighborhood in Brooklyn, United States.

Fort Greene is a neighborhood in Brooklyn with tree-lined streets where brick row houses and brownstone buildings from the 1800s cluster around Fort Greene Park. The architecture shows consistent facades with tall stoops, wrought-iron railings and bay windows.

The area takes its name from General Nathanael Greene's Revolutionary War fort built in 1776 during the Battle of Long Island. In the 1800s, the neighborhood developed into a residential district for wealthy New Yorkers.

The Brooklyn Academy of Music hosts theater, dance and film performances, while galleries across the area display contemporary art.

The neighborhood connects to Manhattan through several subway lines at Atlantic Terminal station and the Long Island Rail Road hub. Most shops and restaurants line Fulton Street and DeKalb Avenue.

The Prison Ship Martyrs Monument in Fort Greene Park rises 149 feet (45 meters) and marks the burial site of Revolutionary War soldiers. Walt Whitman supervised the cornerstone laying for the monument in 1847.
