Grove Place Historic District, Historic district in Rochester, New York.
Grove Place is a historic residential district in Rochester containing around 22 houses built between 1850 and 1895 in Victorian and revival styles. The buildings sit on about 8 acres spread across Gibbs, Selden, Grove, and Windsor Streets.
The district grew during the 1800s as a residential area for the prosperous Selden and Ward families, who built and lived in these houses. It received National Register status in 1984 to help protect the buildings and their architectural heritage.
The houses here show how prosperous families lived and shaped their neighborhoods during the 1800s in Rochester. Walking through the streets today, you can still see how the spacious properties and carefully designed homes reflected the wealth and social patterns of that era.
Walking through the area is the best way to view the different houses and their architectural details up close. Access is free and the streets are straightforward to navigate, though having a map or guide beforehand can help you understand what you are seeing.
All 22 houses retain their original structures and forms, offering a rare look at a complete residential block from the 1800s. You rarely find such a continuous collection of period homes from that era in one place in modern Rochester.
