Hales Bar Dam, Hydroelectric dam in Marion County, Tennessee.
Hales Bar Dam is a hydroelectric structure that crosses the Tennessee River in Marion County, spanning roughly 2,300 feet with a height of about 113 feet. The facility generated power from its completion in 1913 until it was deactivated in favor of a newer dam.
Construction began in 1905 by a private power company and opened in 1913 as one of the first major multipurpose dams on a navigable U.S. river. The structure remained in operation for more than 50 years before being replaced by Nickajack Dam.
The dam represents early industrial development along the Tennessee River during the 20th century. It shows how engineers of that era approached large-scale river management for power production.
The dam remains visible from nearby roads, though access to the site may be limited since it is no longer operational. Checking locally about guided tours or viewing opportunities before visiting is recommended.
Engineers attempted innovative repairs using pressure grouting and hot asphalt injection into the foundation to manage leakage problems. These experimental methods highlight how early dam engineers solved structural challenges with the tools they had available.
