Hacienda Juanita, Historic coffee plantation and estate in Maricao, Puerto Rico
Hacienda Juanita is a hotel in Maricao, Puerto Rico, built on the grounds of a former coffee plantation. The property offers 21 rooms, dining facilities, eight bars and four pools spread across about 23 acres with nature trails, waterfalls, and gardens filled with trees and flowers.
The estate was founded between 1833 and 1834 and became one of the region's major coffee plantations during the 1800s. After the local coffee industry declined in the 1960s, it was converted in 1976 into one of the island's first inns, with support from the Puerto Rico Tourism Company to preserve its historic buildings.
The name Hacienda Juanita honors Angelita Comas, wife of a Spanish official who founded the estate. Visitors can experience how plantation life worked through preserved wooden structures and the way the grounds are organized and used today.
The hotel offers free self parking and maintains a smoke-free environment, providing convenient access for guests arriving by car. Staff can assist with tour arrangements and recommendations to explore Maricao and surrounding areas during your stay.
The property maintains working farms and raises small farm animals, allowing visitors to experience traditional farming methods and agritourism activities firsthand. This active agriculture gives guests a direct view into how rural Puerto Ricans live and their relationship with the land.
