Hamtramck Disneyland, Folk art installation in Hamtramck, Michigan, US.
Hamtramck Disneyland is a folk art installation stretching across two adjacent garages that rises approximately 30 feet high and features mechanical propellers, handmade aircraft, and painted wooden soldier cutouts in primary colors. The structure is densely packed with visual elements that catch attention from every angle.
The installation began when Ukrainian-American artist Dmytro Szylak retired from General Motors in 1992 and started transforming the neighborhood with his work. He spent nearly three decades developing this creation before his passing.
The structure displays elements connecting American and Ukrainian heritage through Elvis portraits, Christmas lights, carousel horses, and folk motifs that blend together. This combination of cultural symbols creates a personal expression visible in how the artist merged memories from both backgrounds.
The best view of the installation is from the alley between Sobieski and Klinger Streets, where you can walk by freely at your own pace. For more detailed information and guided experiences, advance arrangements can be made through the Hatch Art organization.
Fashion photographer Bruce Weber selected the site for a photoshoot with model Kate Moss in 2006, bringing international spotlight to this neighborhood creation. This moment drew worldwide attention to what had been a quietly developing local art project.
