Isles of Shoals Light, Maritime navigation beacon on White Island in Isles of Shoals, United States
Isles of Shoals Light is a lighthouse on White Island in an island group off the coast. The white brick tower rises about 18 meters high and stands on this rocky island surrounded by water.
The first light source at this location was operated by Captain Samuel Haley in 1790 as a simple lantern. The current brick structure was built in 1821 as an official navigation marker.
The lighthouse carries the name of the island group where it stands and shapes the appearance of this remote location to this day. Visitors experience here a harsh maritime setting defined by the sea's unpredictability.
The location on an island means visitors can only reach it by boat, which requires advance planning. Weather on the open ocean changes quickly, so bring appropriate clothing.
Writer Nathaniel Hawthorne visited the island in 1852 and described the isolated world of lighthouse keepers in his works. His observations provided literary insight into the difficult life at this remote location.
