Watch Hill, Historic district in Westerly, US
Watch Hill is a coastal village in Rhode Island featuring Victorian mansions, sandy beaches, and an 1856 lighthouse overlooking Block Island Sound. The area spreads along the shore with several inlets and points of land that shape its geography and waterfront character.
The place began as a strategic observation post during the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. This military origin shaped its name, which has remained to the present day.
The Flying Horse Carousel from 1876 remains a working piece of entertainment that visitors can actually ride today. The hand-carved wooden horses and the old-fashioned carousel experience are core parts of the place's character.
The village has multiple beaches, restaurants, and shops in its core area with parking available near the lighthouse. The neighborhood is easy to explore on foot, especially around the main street and waterfront zones.
The 1938 hurricane permanently altered the landscape by creating new water channels at Napatree Point. This geological reshaping separated Sandy Point from the mainland and created the current coastline layout.
