Matthew Fontaine Maury School, Schule in den Vereinigten Staaten
Matthew Fontaine Maury School is a historic school building in Fredericksburg, Virginia, constructed in stages from 1920 to 1937. The multi-part structure displays Colonial Revival architecture with balanced proportions, brick construction, and occupies approximately 7 acres near downtown, including an auditorium added in 1930 and an adjoining elementary building from 1937.
The school opened in 1920 as the city's first purpose-built public high school under the name Fredericksburg High School. It was renamed in 1952 and served students until closing in 1980; the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
The school is named after Matthew Fontaine Maury, a 19th-century oceanographer whose name reflects local pride in scientific achievement. The building served as a gathering place for community events, most notably the annual Dog Mart, which drew thousands of people and became an important social tradition in Fredericksburg.
The building is visible from nearby streets and public pathways close to downtown and can be viewed from the outside. The adjacent stadium remains in active community use and is accessible, while the school building itself has been converted to residential units and is private property.
The school site was originally a burial ground, with graves relocated before construction began. The adjacent Maury Stadium hosted the legendary Dog Mart, an annual dog show that drew thousands of visitors from Canada, England, and beyond.
