Maka Yusota

Maka Yusota is a year-round spring in Savage that flows continuously from underground sources beneath the landscape. Water pushes upward through sandy layers at the bottom, creating a constant bubbling motion in the pool above.

The site received official recognition when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003 for its cultural significance. This designation acknowledged both its environmental importance and its role in the heritage of local communities.

The Dakota people hold this spring as a place of spiritual importance that reflects their long relationship with the land and its natural features. This cultural connection shapes how visitors today understand and experience the site.

The spring can be reached only by following an unmarked path through private land, so visitors should seek local guidance before attempting to visit. Approaching the site requires careful attention to boundaries and respect for nearby properties.

The water remains liquid even during the coldest winter months because an artesian well constantly forces fresh water upward from below. This underground heat source allows the spring to flow year-round without ever freezing solid.
