New York City Police Academy
The New York City Police Academy is a training facility for the NYPD located on a large campus in College Point, Queens. The grounds include classrooms, fitness areas, a gymnasium, an indoor track, and specially designed rooms that recreate police stations, stores, restaurants, courthouses, banks, and subway cars for hands-on practice.
The original academy opened in Manhattan in 1964 but grew too small as recruit classes expanded over the decades. Planning for a replacement began in the late 1980s, and after construction started in 2009 on a former parking lot in Queens, the new campus opened in 2015.
Officers trained here will work in one of the most diverse cities in the world, and part of their preparation reflects that reality. Training groups often bring together recruits from many different backgrounds, which shapes the way classes are run and how communication skills are taught.
The campus sits in College Point, Queens, far from the nearest subway station in Flushing, so most visitors arrive by bus or car. The grounds are large, so allow extra time to find your way between the buildings once you arrive.
There is no shooting range on the campus: firearms training takes place at a separate facility in the Bronx, and driving skills are practiced at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. A single officer in training therefore moves between multiple boroughs to complete their preparation.
