Peabody Place, Shopping center in downtown Memphis, United States
Peabody Place is a mixed-use development in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, covering several city blocks with a combination of residential, office, and retail spaces. It brings together restored older buildings and newer construction within a single connected area of the city center.
The development opened in 2001 with a large multiplex cinema and several national retail chains as its main tenants. As shopping habits changed, many stores left, and the area was gradually converted to serve other uses.
The name comes from a 19th-century philanthropist who had a strong connection to Memphis. Today you can watch office workers, shoppers, and residents moving through the same streets and buildings in very different ways.
The area sits in the heart of downtown Memphis and is easy to reach on foot from nearby landmarks like Beale Street and FedExForum. It is worth walking through the different blocks, since the character of the spaces can change from one street to the next.
Part of the former retail complex now houses the global headquarters of a major corporation, which was not the original purpose of the space at all. The cinema that once anchored the site has since closed, leaving behind a building that now serves a very different function.
