Peshtigo Reef Light, lighthouse in Wisconsin, United States
Peshtigo Reef Light is a lighthouse standing on a reef in lower Green Bay, Wisconsin, about four miles offshore from Peshtigo Point. The structure features a white steel tower with a red band, built in 1936 on a concrete foundation, and rises approximately 72 feet (22 meters) above the water.
A simple wooden skeleton tower marked the reef beginning in 1867, but proved inadequate for the challenging conditions. A lightship was stationed here from 1905 until the permanent lighthouse was completed in 1936 to provide year-round navigation safety.
The lighthouse stands on a remote reef and is viewable only from the water or by air. The site is closed to the public for safety reasons, so visitors can observe it from a distance or during boat tours near the reef.
A former lightship captain later became the lighthouse keeper and regularly inspected the station, reflecting his extensive knowledge of the treacherous waters. This rare continuity between the two types of navigation aids shows how deeply connected the maritime history of the region truly is.
