Green Island Light, Lighthouse in Green Bay, Marinette County, United States.
Green Island Light is a two-story brick building with an attached square tower located near the shore of Green Island in Green Bay. The structure was equipped with a fourth-order Fresnel lens to guide vessels through these waters.
Construction started in 1862 after a military assessment determined that a light was needed for safe passage through these waters. A modern steel tower took over its primary role in 1956.
Samuel Drew and his wife Mary managed the station until 1881, farming the island land while raising their children, two of whom continued the lighthouse keeping tradition.
The site can be visited and offers views across the shoreline and surrounding islands of Green Bay. Choose clear weather and wear sturdy shoes, as the ground can be uneven in places.
During a major forest fire in 1871, the keeper operated the light during daylight hours to warn ships through thick smoke. This action highlighted how critical the structure was for water safety.
