The Richardsonian Romanesque building at 65 Wooster Street features architectural elements characteristic of late 19th-century public institutions.
Constructed in 1895 under architect Charles T. Beardsley Jr's direction, the library received National Register of Historic Places recognition in 1978.
The library maintains a collection of 131,145 volumes and organizes numerous reading programs, storytelling sessions, and book discussions throughout the year.
Visitors can access resources through the Evergreen automation system, which connects to a broader network of Connecticut public libraries.
The original structure, built on land donated by David Wells Plumb's widow, received a substantial expansion in 1975 that doubled its size.
