The Upper Main Street Historic District contains a collection of late 19th-century commercial buildings with Italianate and Romanesque architectural elements along Main Street.
The district emerged during Ansonia's rapid commercial expansion in the 1870s and received National Register of Historic Places designation in December 1982.
The three-story brick buildings showcase sophisticated architectural details in their cornices, while the Ansonia Opera House stands as a central structure.
The district spans two acres along the eastern bank of the Naugatuck River, with connected masonry buildings extending from Maple Street to the opera house.
Railroad tracks and a flood wall separate the district from the Naugatuck River, while a neo-Classical Savings Bank features an elaborate granite facade.
