Pomperaug Trail

Pomperaug Trail is a hiking path that winds through Oxford and Southbury, offering a mix of terrain types to walkers. The route passes through steep sections, flat stretches, and along the Housatonic River, giving hikers varied landscapes and forest settings.

The trail's name comes from a Pootatuck Native American chief who sold this land to European settlers in the early colonial period. This connection to the region's earliest days shapes the area's identity even now.

The Connecticut Forest and Park Association maintains this Blue-Blazed trail system, which forms part of the extensive mid-Housatonic River Trails network.

Jackson Cove Park is the main entry point for the trail, though alternative parking is available from November to March due to the regular park closure. Plan your visit accordingly to ensure you can reach the parking you need.

Several unbridged streams and brooks cross the path, creating natural water features that change after rainfall. These flowing waters give the route a distinctive quality and influence how hikers experience the terrain.
