United States Post Office–Ansonia Main, Post office building in Ansonia, Connecticut.
The United States Post Office in Ansonia is a limestone structure on Main Street featuring four Ionic columns supporting a recessed entrance and a decorative dentillated cornice. A modern rear addition with a loading dock was added later to meet contemporary postal service requirements.
The building was constructed in 1914 as part of federal architecture efforts of that time, designed by Oscar Wenderoth, who served as Supervising Architect for the U.S. Treasury Department. It stands as an expression of federal authority in the city during the early 20th century.
The building shows early 1900s features with its white terrazzo marble floors, plaster finishes, and original wooden trim throughout the interior. These details remain visible today and give a sense of the craftsmanship typical of that era.
The building is easy to find on Main Street with plenty of space to view the classical facade from outside. Visitors should note that the rear areas with the loading dock are not open to the public.
The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 for its architectural contribution to Ansonia's downtown business district. This recognition honored its role in shaping the visual character of the city center.
