Prairie Island Indian Community, Native American reservation in Goodhue County, Minnesota, United States.
Prairie Island Indian Community is a Dakota reservation along the Mississippi River, near Red Wing in Goodhue County, Minnesota. The land includes areas managed by the tribal community as well as sections under federal oversight.
The Dakota were relocated to this stretch of the Mississippi in the late 19th century after being removed from their original homelands. The community later lost more land when the federal government built Lock and Dam No. 3 along the river.
The community is home to Dakota Nation members who speak their language and practice traditional ceremonies in daily life. Visitors can experience local culture during the annual Prairie Island Pow Wow, where dance, music, and crafts bring people together.
The Treasure Island Resort and Casino, operated on tribal land, is the main facility open to the general public. The rest of the territory is largely private, so contacting the community before visiting other areas is a good idea.
The community holds an annual Pow Wow that is open to outside visitors, offering a chance to see Dakota singing, dancing, and crafts. Prairie Island is also among the few tribal communities in the region that has invested in solar energy on its land.
