The Plaza del Mercado de Ponce spans an entire city block at the intersection of Calle Atocha, Estrella, Leon, and Castillo streets.
Engineer Timoteo Luberza designed this marketplace, which opened in 1863 under Mayor Luis de Quixano with 65 original vendor kiosks.
The structure combines Neoclassical and Art Deco architectural elements, featuring a facade designed by architect Pedro Mendez Mercado in 1941.
Visitors can find fresh produce, traditional candies, handmade cigars, crafts, musical instruments, and lottery tickets across numerous vendor stands.
The marketplace underwent a $4 million restoration in 2006, returning to its original function after operating temporarily at Plaza del Mercado Juan Bigas.
