Museo de la Música Puertorriqueña, Music museum in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
The Museo de la Música Puertorriqueña is a music museum housed in a restored pastel-colored villa in downtown Ponce, a former residence of the Serrallés family. The collection includes Taíno, Spanish, and African musical instruments along with memorabilia and artifacts documenting the range of local musical traditions.
The museum was founded in 1991 and moved to its current location in 1996. The institution was renamed in 2012 to honor singer Ruth Fernández and her contributions to Puerto Rico's musical heritage.
The displays show how different cultures shaped Puerto Rican music, from Taíno traditions through Spanish influences to African rhythms that blend together. You can see how these traditions continue to shape the island's musical identity today.
The museum sits at the corner of Isabel and Salud streets in downtown Ponce and is open from Wednesday through Sunday. Allow time to explore the collections at a comfortable pace while taking in the building's architecture.
The building was once the residence of the Serrallés family, who were known for producing rum on the island. This connection to a major local industry adds an unexpected historical layer to the museum beyond its musical focus.
