Ponce City Hall, Municipal government building at Plaza las Delicias in Ponce, Puerto Rico
Ponce City Hall is a municipal government building at Plaza las Delicias with symmetrical Neoclassical Isabelino design across two stories. The structure features five bays with a prominent clock tower and two internal courtyards connected by an extensive central staircase.
Construction of the building began in 1844 under Mayor Salvador de Vives with Francisco Gil Capó directing the project until 1847. The structure was completed during Ponce's development as a major urban center on the island.
The building sits on Plaza las Delicias as a gathering point where residents conduct civic business and municipal affairs. It embodies Ponce's identity as an administrative center and remains a recognized landmark for the community.
The building houses municipal administrative offices and is accessible from outside for visitors interested in viewing the architecture. The interior courtyards provide shade and a comfortable place to rest while exploring the plaza area.
Former jail cells within the building now serve as office spaces, offering visitors a glimpse into the structure's complex past. The courtyard was the location of the last public execution by hanging in Puerto Rico.
