Puente de Los Leones, Art Deco bridge in Ponce, Puerto Rico
Puente de Los Leones is an Art Deco bridge that crosses the Rio Portugues and connects three neighborhoods in Ponce. The structure features steel and cast concrete construction with decorative details running along its length.
The bridge was built in 1900 using city funds to improve connections between Ponce's neighborhoods. Following a major renovation in the 1990s, it regained prominence as a vital transportation link.
Two brass lions created by sculptor Victor Ochoa stand on 20-foot pedestals at the western entrance, representing wisdom and hope for the city.
The bridge features wide pedestrian areas on both sides, providing safe passage for walkers and cyclists. The location is well-lit during the day and easy to navigate.
Sixteen decorative lampposts and marble embellishments adorn the bridge, which was designed by architect Ilia Sanchez Arana with steel and cast-in-place concrete.
