Ponce Municipal Library

Ponce Municipal Library is a modern facility in the San Anton district along Miguel Pou Boulevard that spans multiple floors with varied collections. The main building is complemented by seven satellite branches throughout the municipality, offering book lending, computer access, and educational programs.

The institution was founded in 1870 as Gabinete de Lectura by Alejandro Tapia y Rivera, making it Puerto Rico's oldest municipal library. The current building opened in 2007 after replacing the former district courthouse site with a structure featuring modern technological systems.

The library maintains sections focused on Puerto Rican literature and local history materials that reflect the island's cultural heritage. Dedicated children's areas encourage reading and learning among young visitors.

The facility is accessible from multiple locations throughout the municipality thanks to the network of branch libraries spread across the area. Modern facilities include computer workstations and educational resources available during operating hours.

The building was constructed on the site of the former district courthouse, transforming a judicial space into a center for learning and community access. This repurposing shows how the city adapted its existing infrastructure to better serve residents.
