Founded in 1870 as Gabinete de Lectura by Alejandro Tapia y Rivera, this institution stands as the oldest municipal library in Puerto Rico.
The library maintains specialized sections dedicated to Puerto Rican literature, local history materials, and children's educational resources.
Seven satellite branches complement the main facility, offering book lending services, computer access, and educational programs throughout Ponce municipality.
The 2007 construction cost 14 million dollars and replaced the former Puerto Rico District Court building with advanced technological infrastructure.
