The Archivo Histórico de Ponce occupies three floors with 19,700 square feet of space, containing over one million documents in 300,000 indexed files.
Established in 1812, the archive originated from the Archivo de la Secretaria del Municipio de Ponce at Ponce City Hall before moving to its current location.
The archive maintains an extensive collection of newspapers from the 18th to 21st centuries, including La Gaceta de Puerto Rico and El Aguila de Puerto Rico.
Thirty-two employees, including twelve professional archivists, assist visitors in accessing historical documents, photographs, maps, and architectural plans throughout the facility.
The collection includes a registry of slaves and municipal documents dating back to the 1812 Municipal Assembly, making it Puerto Rico's most complete historical archive.
