Postmasters, Contemporary art gallery in Tribeca, Manhattan, United States
Postmasters is an art gallery in Tribeca located on the ground floor of a building on Franklin Street, with additional exhibition space in the basement level below. The layout allows the gallery to show multiple works and installations at the same time across these connected areas.
The gallery started in the East Village in 1984 and moved several times over the decades, first to SoHo in 1989, then to Chelsea in 1998, and finally to Tribeca in 2013. Each move followed the shifts in where artists and galleries were gathering in New York.
The gallery shows experimental digital media, software installations, and video works created by artists who push what art can be through technology. Visitors encounter pieces that blur lines between traditional artmaking and digital experience in ways that feel fresh and unexpected.
Visit during regular business hours, which you can check online before heading over since they may change seasonally. The Tribeca location is easy to reach by subway and walking around the neighborhood offers many nearby cafes and restaurants.
In 2001, a live video installation in the space accidentally captured events that reshaped New York's history, turning an ordinary city view into an unintended historical record. This chance recording became a silent witness to a pivotal moment for the city.
