Salem Sue, Fiberglass roadside monument in New Salem, United States
Salem Sue is an oversized fiberglass sculpture of a Holstein cow standing on School Hill above New Salem and overlooking the surrounding countryside. The structure is constructed from reinforced fiberglass sections assembled together to form the complete animal figure.
The statue was commissioned in 1974 by the New Salem Lions Club to honor the region's dairy farming heritage. The project was financed through contributions from the local community and the dairy industry.
The statue represents the strong dairy farming identity of the area, and the local high school teams are named after Holstein cattle. People here view it as a symbol of their agricultural heritage.
The sculpture sits on School Hill near the highway and is visible from the road, making it easy to pull over and view up close. A donation container is maintained on site for those who wish to contribute to its upkeep.
The figure can be spotted from neighboring counties and serves as a visual landmark for travelers on the highway. Many people recognize this oversized cow long before arriving in town.
