Santanoni Peak, Mountain summit in Adirondack Park, New York, United States
Santanoni Peak is a mountain summit in the Adirondack range that rises to approximately 4,607 feet, making it the fourteenth highest point in the region. The entire mountain is covered with dense forest that extends from the lower slopes all the way to the summit.
The peak was named after Saint Anthony by French Canadian fur traders and missionaries during early exploration of the region. This name from the early colonial period has remained in use ever since and continues to identify the mountain today.
The mountain is part of the Adirondack 46ers challenge, a goal pursued by hikers who aim to summit all major peaks in the range. This climbing tradition has created a strong community of outdoor enthusiasts who regularly share their achievements and experiences.
The mountain is accessed via the Upper Works trailhead near Newcomb, where a marked trail covers about 10 kilometers for a round trip. The path follows steep terrain, so sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness help make the hike more manageable.
The summit has a distinctive microclimate that is warmer and wetter than surrounding mountains, which allows for especially thick vegetation. This special environment makes it possible to spot plants and wildlife that are less common elsewhere in the range.
