Sandy Hook Pilots Association, Maritime pilotage organization in Staten Island, United States
The Sandy Hook Pilots Association is a maritime pilotage organization in Staten Island that guides ships through the Port of New York and New Jersey waterways. It assists oceangoing vessels, passenger liners, freighters, and tankers in navigating these heavily traveled shipping routes.
The organization was founded in 1895 and ended the rivalries that existed between separate pilot groups. The purchase of thirty pilot boats and the launch of the steam pilot boat New York in 1897 established it as a unified maritime institution.
The association carries forward maritime traditions through an apprenticeship program that trains future pilots in navigating the complex waters of the harbor. Knowledge passes directly from experienced captains to newcomers who learn the waterways over time.
The organization provides pilotage services year-round from its base on Edgewater Street and assists vessels in all weather conditions. Visitors can observe the waterfront operations from Staten Island's shoreline and watch harbor activity from various public vantage points.
During the September 11, 2001 attacks, the pilot boat New York served as an emergency command center in the harbor. The vessel played a critical role in coordinating rescue and relief operations during one of the city's darkest hours.
