Shelton Hall, Historic university dormitory in Boston, Massachusetts, US
Shelton Hall is a nine-story brick structure at 91 Bay State Road featuring large windows, ornate limestone detailing, and a classically styled main entrance. The building now serves as student housing with living quarters, study areas, and offices for members of Boston University's Kilachand Honors College.
The building was constructed in 1923 as the Sheraton Hotel and influenced the naming of the entire Sheraton hotel chain when Ernest Henderson purchased it in 1939. This original hotel purpose shaped the structure's design and layout before it eventually became part of the university.
The fourth floor houses the Writer's Corridor, a space that draws people interested in American theater and literary history. Visitors can sense the connection to a significant chapter in the nation's dramatic arts.
The building is part of the campus and is most easily accessible during the academic year when the university is in session. Keep in mind this is an active student residence, so access may be limited to public areas of the property.
The building preserves its original 1920s hotel elevator system, complete with mechanical indicators and brass-trimmed doors on each floor. These working mechanical details from the hotel era offer a glimpse into the practical conveniences of that period.
