South Ferry Plaza, Unfinished skyscraper project at South Ferry Terminal, Manhattan, United States
South Ferry Plaza is an unfinished skyscraper project at the South Ferry Terminal in Lower Manhattan near the East River. The planned 1,084-foot tower was designed as a glass structure incorporating recycled marble and steel elements into its framework.
The project was proposed in 1987 by architecture firm FXCollaborative as a 60-story office building for Lower Manhattan. Financial difficulties led to its cancellation in 1991 before construction could be completed.
The design featured a glass dome with three restaurants and an observation deck intended to serve as a light beacon at night.
The unfinished site is visible from the South Ferry Station area, where visitors can see the remains of the planned development. You can explore the location from various public areas near the waterfront and observe the surrounding urban landscape.
The tower would have created 1.5 million square feet of office space while doubling the size of Battery Park. A standout feature was the planned glass dome housing restaurants and an observation deck intended to glow as a light beacon at night.
