Smith Point Bridge, Drawbridge at Smith Point, New York
The steel bascule bridge extends 1,216 feet across The Narrows, connecting Long Island to Fire Island through the William Floyd Parkway.
Opening on July 4, 1959, the bridge replaced earlier wooden structures that had served the area since 1916 but frequently succumbed to winter conditions.
The bridge bears the name of William 'Tangier' Smith, a 17th-century landowner who possessed substantial oceanfront property in the surrounding region.
The structure features two traffic lanes with a 29-ton load limit and maintains a clearance of 22 feet above the mean high water level.
A new replacement bridge, approved in 2019 with a budget of 73 million dollars, will provide 55 feet of vertical clearance for marine traffic.
