Spillover II, Steel letter sculpture in Atwater Park, Shorewood, US
Spillover II is a steel sculpture made from large connected letters in Shorewood's Atwater Park. The eight-foot-tall figure shows a crouching human form constructed entirely from letter shapes that rest on a concrete base.
The sculpture became Shorewood's first public art acquisition in 2010 through funding from an anonymous donor. The work was modified in 2016 to address concerns from the community about its letter arrangements.
The figure is built from large letters welded together, showing how language and the human body can merge into one form. When you stand before it, you notice how readable text mixes with sculpture in an unexpected way.
The work sits at the corner of Capitol Drive and Lake Drive overlooking Lake Michigan. Interior lighting illuminates the sculpture during evening hours, making it visible after sunset.
The sculpture was created by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, who is known for making large figures from letter forms. The 2016 modifications show how public art can shift based on what viewers and neighbors think.
