St. Francis Hospital, hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States

St. Francis Hospital is a former hospital building built in Queen Anne style located in Ohio and now serving as senior housing. The four-and-a-half story structure features a distinctive exterior of brick and stone with turrets, dormer windows, ornamental gables, a central cupola, and a raised stone basement typical of late 1800s architecture.

Founded by the Sisters of the Poor in the late 1880s, the hospital grew through additions into the early 1900s as a pioneer facility treating cancer and tuberculosis patients. The building closed in 1981 after nearly a century of service and was converted into senior housing while gaining recognition on the National Register of Historic Places.

The name honors Saint Francis and the Sisters of the Poor who founded this hospital with a commitment to serve everyone in need. The building still reflects this spirit of community care that defined its long years of service to the neighborhood.

The building sits in the South Fairmount neighborhood a few miles south of downtown Cincinnati and is accessible on foot. The exterior details including stonework, brick patterns, and roof lines are clearly visible from street level, making it easy to appreciate the architectural craftsmanship from outside.

This facility was among the first west of the Appalachians to treat cancer patients and opened an advanced research laboratory in 1939, making it a pioneering center when such medical advancements were rare in the region. Its chapel features colorful stained glass windows that continue to cast soft light through the interior, a detail many visitors overlook while focusing on the exterior architecture.
