Lower Price Hill Historic District
Lower Price Hill Historic District, Historic district in East Price Hill, Cincinnati, US.
Lower Price Hill Historic District is a collection of 196 buildings located in East Price Hill, west of downtown Cincinnati. The structures line West Eighth Street, State Street, Burns Street, and English Street, forming a neighborhood with residential and commercial buildings representing different periods and styles.
The area began developing in the 1850s to house workers from the nearby Mill Creek Valley, an important industrial and transportation center. The neighborhood grew as Cincinnati expanded during its period of industrial growth and became a major hub for workers and their families.
The buildings in this historic area display Classical Revival, Italianate, and Queen Anne architectural styles mixed together on both residential and commercial structures. Walking through the neighborhood, you can observe how these different design approaches sit side by side, creating the visual character of the district.
The best way to explore the area is on foot, walking through the four main streets to see the different building types and styles. The West End Bank and Trust building at the corner of Eighth and State Street serves as an easy landmark to orient yourself in the neighborhood.
The district earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, protecting buildings from Cincinnati's industrial boom period. This designation makes it one of the most carefully documented working-class neighborhoods from that era.
