Sycamore Shoals

Sycamore Shoals is a rapids section where the Watauga River flows through the mountains of East Tennessee, creating natural water cascades over limestone bedrock. This National Historic Landmark stretches along these rapids and includes paved walking paths, interpretive signs, and a visitor center for exploration.

The rapids marked a gathering point in 1780 where settlers assembled before marching against British forces during the American Revolutionary War. This historic meeting place held significance in the military movements of that period.

The site preserves memories of frontier life through educational programs, historical exhibits, and annual reenactments showing how settlers lived during the 1700s. Visitors experience these traditions through events held regularly at the location.

The site is easy to walk around with paved paths and restroom facilities available. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear and follow the river's course to fully explore the water formations and the surrounding area.
