Tennessee Temple University, American religious university
Tennessee Temple University was a private college in Chattanooga that operated from 1946 to 2015 and focused on Christian education. The campus in Highland Park offered degree programs and seminary training for those preparing for ministry and Christian service.
Founded in 1946 by Baptist pastor Lee Roberson, the university was created to train church leaders and grew significantly over its first decades. Financial challenges in the 2010s led to its closure in 2015, when it merged with Piedmont International University based in North Carolina.
The name references the biblical temple and symbolized the school's religious mission to train church leaders. Students were part of a faith community focused on developing pastors and missionaries, making the institution central to the local Baptist movement and Christian education in the region.
The campus is no longer in operation, but the former buildings and grounds in Highland Park remain accessible for viewing. Visitors can explore the area to see the layout and architecture that once housed classrooms, dormitories, and athletic facilities serving the student community.
The university was known for its strong athletic program with teams called the Crusaders competing in national Christian college competitions. A distinctive feature was its deep connection to Highland Park Baptist Church through the long-standing friendship of its founders that shaped the institution for decades.
