The New York Chinese Scholar's Garden, Chinese garden at Staten Island Botanical Garden, US
The New York Chinese Scholar's Garden is an Asian garden on Staten Island featuring multiple pavilions, cascading water features, and pond areas. The space includes bamboo groves, winding pathways, and landscaped sections with aquatic life.
The garden was constructed in 1998 by forty Chinese artisans from Suzhou and opened to visitors in 1999. These skilled craftspeople brought their traditional building methods directly from China to realize the design.
The garden reflects Ming Dynasty building traditions through its wooden structures. Visitors can observe how each element connects using ancient joining methods without modern fasteners.
The garden is open on weekends and offers multiple pathways to explore at your own pace. Wearing comfortable shoes is advisable since trails wind through landscaped sections and over gentle slopes.
A mosaic in the upper pavilion features broken rice bowls from China combined with beer bottles from America. This unusual mix represents the cultural bridge between the two nations.
