The Gallery at Market East, Retail District in Center City, Philadelphia
The Gallery at Market East is a multi-story shopping center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, built partly below street level and directly connected to subway and commuter rail stations. The building rises four floors and uses skylights to bring daylight down into the lower sections.
The center opened in 1977 as a way to bring shoppers back to downtown Philadelphia after suburban malls had pulled retail away from the city. Over the years it shifted from upscale stores toward discount retailers before undergoing major renovation work.
The center sits on Market Street, one of Philadelphia's main commercial corridors, and its name reflects that location directly. Inside, works by local artists are displayed throughout the space, giving the interior a connection to the city's own story.
The center is located at 9th and Market Streets and is easy to reach by public transit since it connects directly to subway and rail platforms below. The underground sections offer shelter from rain or cold and let you cross through part of downtown without going outside.
The building was designed by James Rouse, the same developer behind Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston and South Street Seaport in New York. He brought together shopping, offices, and transit access under one roof, which was an unusual combination for the time it was built.
