Tremont Nail Company, Historical nail factory in Wareham, Massachusetts, US
The Tremont Nail Company is an industrial complex in Wareham with five buildings housing approximately 60 nail machines. Many of these machines date back more than 125 years and produce steel cut nails for construction purposes.
The company was founded in 1819 by Isaac and Jared Pratt on the site of a cotton mill destroyed during the War of 1812. This location allowed the founders to use existing infrastructure for their nail manufacturing operation.
The factory displays craftsmanship through its original wooden beams and roof trusses built by skilled regional shipwrights. Visitors can observe how these construction methods shaped the work experience across generations.
The complex sits on accessible terrain with good road access and can be visited for guided tours or self-directed exploration. Best visiting times are during work weeks when machinery is operating and nail production can be observed.
An 1851 bell in the factory's cupola has signaled the start and end of work days for six generations of workers. This bell stands as evidence of the site's long continuity in production.
