Thomas Powers School, Schule in den Vereinigten Staaten
Thomas Powers School is a three-story stone building completed in 1900, located at the corner of Frankford Avenue and East Somerset Street in Philadelphia's Port Richmond neighborhood. The structure features Romanesque Revival design with a prominent rounded tower projecting from the front, sloped gables, large windows, and substantial chimneys on a granite foundation.
The school was built around 1900 to serve children in the neighborhood, many from families of industrial workers and immigrants. After decades of operation, it closed as populations shifted to the suburbs, but the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 to protect its historical significance.
The school served as a central meeting place for families in the neighborhood, particularly for children of industrial workers and immigrants. It represented the city's commitment to providing education for all, including English and civics classes that helped newcomers adapt to American life.
The building is viewable from the exterior, displaying its Romanesque Revival architecture in full detail. Today it houses Kreate Hub, a creative workspace, so it is not open as a museum for casual visits, but special art events and exhibitions are held that visitors can attend.
After closing as a school, the building was transformed in 2018 by an artist collective called Kreate Space into a center for artists and entrepreneurs while retaining historic features like oak floors and pressed tin ceilings. Today it operates as Kreate Hub Philly, an active workspace offering affordable studios and offices while honoring the neighborhood's industrial past.
