Twin Oaks, listed on the NRHP in Anne Arundel County, Maryland

Twin Oaks is a brick mansion built in 1857 on approximately 16 acres in Anne Arundel County with Georgian and Neo-Classical architectural elements. The two-and-a-half-story house features a columned front porch and a distinctive Palladian window above the main entrance.

The house was built in 1857 by William Linthicum as a wedding gift for his daughter Mary. John Charles Linthicum, who later lived there and served in Congress from 1911 to 1932, helped establish the Star Spangled Banner as the nation's official song.

Twin Oaks served as a gathering place for political figures and notable guests during the early 20th century. The house reflects the lifestyle and social standing of Maryland's prominent families, offering insight into how wealthy households functioned during that period.

Twin Oaks remains a private residence and can only be viewed from the street and its perimeter. You can walk by the property to observe the architectural details and the gardens without accessing the interior.

The property includes rare garden features such as a Victorian-style birdhouse, an aviary, and a large columned grape arbor that have been preserved over time. These elements reveal how affluent families decorated their grounds with ornamental structures and cultivated plants.
