Arbutus Oak, Historic white oak tree at interstate junction in Arbutus, Maryland, US
The Arbutus Oak reached a height of 70 feet with a diameter of 5 feet, standing near the intersection of Interstate 95 and 695.
General Lafayette and his troops passed by this location during their march in the American Revolutionary War campaign of 1781.
Native American artifacts discovered near the tree during highway construction revealed the area's significance to indigenous peoples.
The Maryland State Highway Administration maintained the grounds around the tree until its natural fall in September 2019.
Highway planners modified the Interstate 95 ramp design specifically to preserve this tree during the 1950s construction phase.
